They have the perfect amount of Stevia to make the drink tasty but not overpoweringly Stevia-ish – unlike other healthy powders and teas that are laden with the natural sweetener. I pour the packet into warm water to help dissolve the crystals and add my cold water and ice afterwards.

Family Time

More and more, people are realizing how integral family time is. I constantly talk with people who have quit their jobs or have been fired or laid off, and are choosing voluntary simplicity so that they can spend more time with family.

One of the many blessings of the internet is that families can be together more often; one or both parents can work from home. This leaves more room to homeschool, if a family chooses to do so.

When I worked in Korea, I was gone all day, got home and my wife wanted some time to herself ( after having been in an apartment with a toddler all day). I spent maybe 2 hours together with my family, as I had to prepare for class. This nearly destroyed my marriage and my daughter wasn’t too close with me. How could she be? She rarely saw me.

The months following our moving, I was still trying to put together my fragmented marriage and family life. I would walk by my wife without really acknowledging her, and she too would do the same. We are soulmates, so this is not acceptable for us. But modern life has modern stresses, and the 9 to 5 is not conducive to wellness or happiness. We therefore have to weigh what our priorities are.

Spending Time With Family

In 2005, MTV had a program on that posed ‘ is this generation the first ‘me’ generation?’ In other words, selfish. We like to pride our world as supporting individuality but in reality, it supports individualism. We are like walking islands, focusing mainly on ourselves. Community has drastically decreased, and so has the family unit. Spending time with family comes after our busy schedules. We ‘fit it in’ when we can.

But this has caused nothing but increased unhappiness and a deep feeling of emptiness and lack of support. Kids and adults both are overscheduled, rushing from one activity to the next. Coach Matthew Kelly mentioned in one of his books how when he asked students what they wanted from life, the overall wanted to be famous. This is the ultimate deification of the ego, and if you take a look at celebrities, it is pretty alienating. Maybe many people know of a person, but that doesn’t meant the celebrity has friends.Nonetheless, it’s what kids want the world over. Fame.

When we spend more time with family, instead of being distracted, we begin to understand how powerful and supportive and family that listens to eachother is. All members grow when they come together amicably. Has the selifishness and hyperconsumerism we see developed because mom, dad, and Johnny are gone all the time, and not spending quality time together?


Voluntary Simplicity

Some families are choosing to drastically alter their lifestyles in order to spend more time together. From conservative religions such as Mormonism, to ‘progressive’ educational movements such as unschooling, single moms to former CEOs have decided that they want to spend more time with family. To do this, some are working from home while others are living off of savings and blogging about their lifestyle. Others are working part time and on a budget, in order to limit their expenses and therefore spend more time at home.

Frugal living means different things to different people, but the overall theme is to not overconsume.

There is a ‘slow family‘ movement brewing in the US, where families are choosing to slow it down and quit overscheduling every moment of every day. This saves money and opens up more time.

Living Simply

In Europe, quality is focused on over quantity. We lived in Italy, and my wife grew up in France. Lifestyle is very important to Europeans. That’s why their quality of living is high, with countries like Spain and France having several hours off for lunch. The US on the other hand puts more of an emphasis on buying frequently, from stores that sell cheap products made in China. Junk food and restaurants serving cheaper, low quality foods reign in popularity. The US has a frantic lifestyle that has gained popularity the world over.

Lifestyle design according to experts such as Tim Ferriss means putting an emphasis on what matters most, to you. If you crave to spend more time with family, this may mean altering what you buy, possibly working from home or at a different job, and living simply. But it can also mean financial abundance…just minus the constant spending on things that will not matter to you in a few months.

Therefore, voluntary simplicity and lifestyle design are not at odds. You don’t have to give up everything.

You just have to put your life’s focus on what you really want, instead of compulsive spending ( which we all do) or overworking.

Healthy Lifestyle and Wellness

What is a healthy lifestyle? Is it merely counting calories and going to the gym? NO. It comes from taking control of our lives. Most of us live pretty unconsciously and are on a set treadmill. Many chose careers that someone else wanted for them, or that they felt ‘would make me able to provide for my family’. In these economic times, we are seeing trends that jobs we once were told would be successful and ‘stable’ are in fact not. It’s a facade.

That is why lifestyle design in the US and abroad has become so popular, as people are in need of an alternative.

If we can go back to our passions and make a career out of them, or spend less time at work, and be in control of what we buy, then we have more time for the real treasures in our lives. We have to make family time our focus and schedule things around that.

Not the reverse.
